Rujiman is an artist from Yogyakarta who is diligent, competent and has a strong character in his work.
Born in February 15th 1975, Rujiman obtained his degree in Arts from the School of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta. He is Indonesian and currently living in Yogyakarta. His paintings stand out with Koi fish as his signature subject matters. Rujiman captures Koi fishes onto canvas as he perceives them. Their colorful beauty and graceful movements are drawn using a pallet knife, presented in an impressionist style. But what makes it more noticeable is the impasto technique he uses on his works which resonate the energy and emotion from his subject matters. Although Koi culture originally came from Japan, Rujiman’s Asian roots has provided him a connection easily with other Asian culture and philosophy.
My inspiration for painting koi didn't just happen. From a young age I was close to the river, the river became my space to make memories that eventually when I grew up, I painted the fish and my heart was tethered to koi carps. Philosophically Koi carp is luck, and I want to make and share luck with everyone. In the midst of so many koi painters, there is something that makes me different from other koi painters, namely that I am a painter who is consistent and competent in painting. This can be seen from my track record of painting koi which is more than twenty years. Consistently painting koi that I live slowly forms a distinctive character in me where koi painting depicts a strong, consistent and competent character of myself.
